Propaganda was such an integral part of Soviet reality that it had to be present virtually everywhere - just like commercial advertisements are present everywhere in Western society. Every magazine had a political section, and the publisher had to employ "propagandists" that were creating the contents of those sections.

In one way, the Soviet propaganda was a bit less intrusive than the western ads - You could skip the front section and get ad-free content afterwards.

The intensity and form of propaganda was changing thru time, and You can perfectly see it on our images. In the fifties, it was colorful, intense, deeply believed. In the eighties, it was more spread out but boring, dull and without any spark. Marasmus prevailed.

The numbers below images identify pictures for ordering and describe they origin:

• the first number is the year printed

• the second number is the month (these magazines went out monthly)

• the third number tells the location of the image within the magazine:

  • "1" is the front cover,

  • "2" is the back of the front cover,

  • "3" is the back of the back cover,

  • "4" is the back cover.

  • "Mid" means that the image is not on the covers but inside the magazine.

  • "st" means a different magazine,

  • "inset" means a print that was inserted into the magazine.
